Special Opportunities

Whether you plan to spend your life in the theatre or just want to have fun in a college production...whether you see yourself in front of the footlights or behind the stage, City College offers you all kinds of special opportunities.

OUR PRODUCTION SEASON
Students are invited to audition for our season of productions, directed by faculty members and invited professionals. We do 4-6 such productions on a regular basis in our state-of-the-art mainstage and studio theatres.

THE SUMMER SCHOLARS’ THEATRE ACADEMY

For high school sophomores and juniors: Every summer we sponsor an exciting series of performance-related classes taught by CCNY Theatre Faculty, culminating in an open presentation. Some selected students from the Academy may be invited to perform in Harlem Repertory Theate productions. Participation in this program will give the accepted student college credit.

HARLEM REPERTORY THEATRE

Founded in 2003, The Harlem Repertory Theatre is a professional summer theatre which presents 2 to 3 polished shows annually. Currently enrolled students perform alongside seasoned professionals in polished, fully mounted shows which are presented in Aaron Davis Hall for the community-at-large. This is a wonderful way for a student to round out their formal educational experience.

CLASSICAL THEATRE OF HARLEM AFFILIATION
The Classic Theatre of Harlem is an award-winning professional theatre company, housed in the immediate neighborhood of the College. It is without question the most successful theatre company in uptown New York and one that has attracted some of the most positive attention among the city’s newer institutional theatres.

We sponsor, for a small number of specially selected upper-level students who have been in a number of CCNY productions, an affiliation with the Classic Theatre of Harlem whereby they are invited to audition for CTH’s regular production season. Students who are cast will get college internship credit. We also recommend, on a highly limited basis, accomplished directing students to assistant direct with the seasoned professionals at CTH, also for college internship credit.

HB AFFILIATION
Upper level students who have completed their major requirements and taken a significant number of electives may register for a restrained number of courses offered at HB Studio in Greenwich and receive college credit through the intership program. We are extremely proud of this affiliation with one of the oldest and most respected professional training studios in New York City, founded by the great actors Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen.

DIRECTOR/PLAYWRIGHT CONNECTION
Advanced playwriting students who author full-length works are invited to submit their plays for consideration for production. The Department endeavors to pair selected plays with student directors who present them as staged readings and, on occasion, as fully mounted productions.

THE ANNUAL ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL
Growing out of the Directing 2 Class, students stage and present a marathon of one-act plays in the studio theatres, as a culminating event of the season, one of the most exciting programs we sponsor.

ADVANCED DIRECTING PROJECTS

Highly motivated students who have complete Directing 1 and Directing 2 with a track record of success may come forward with ideas for projects for productions of larger scope. Each year, a certain number of these will be selected for production in the studio theatres and on the mainstage.

ACTING IN FILM PROJECTS

We enjoy a collaborative relationship with the prestigious undergraduate and graduate CCNY Film Programs. Students who gain acting for the camera experience by participating in student films may propose to receive credit for these projects under the Performance Practice in Film rubric.

THE CHARLES GATTNIG MEMORIAL THEATRE LIBRARY
We have more than 5,000 volumes of plays, anthologies, volumes of theatre history and criticism, biographies, books on design and more. This collection, one of the best in the city, is composed of books donated by Glenn Young, owner of Applause Theatre Books along with gifts from former faculty and distinguished donors.

DAVIS HALL INC.
Alongside the Theatre Department’s presentations at Aaron Davis Hall, the not-for-profit organization Davis Hall Inc. sponsors an extremely exciting season of professional dance, music and performance art events, hosting some of the world’s most exciting performing artists and producing their own professional series. Reduced price tickets are available to CCNY students for many events.
