CCNY's Online Writing Lab (CCNYOWL) provides free consultation and assistance to students enrolled in writing-intensive courses. Watch the video below to find out more!
The Writing Center accepts email submissions of questions about a paper or assignment. If you have a paper of five pages or fewer, please fill out the form. Keep in mind however, the more detailed about what kind of help you need, the better. A writing consultant will only spend one hour reviewing your paper. Additionally, we do not edit or proofread your paper; we help with structure, argument, and direction. Students are only allowed one email consultation per day and no more than two per week. Most submissions will be responded to within 48 hours. Click here to submit your paper.
ASK A TUTOR
This online service is for students with quick, writing-related concerns. On this page or the Writing Center’s main website, a student can easily find the Ask a Tutor interface and “chat” with a writing consultant during the scheduled hours. This service is intended for brief and specific questions that students might have about parts of their paper or assignment. Due to high-volume traffic, this service should not be used for cut-and-paste proofreading or general reviewing of student papers (see the email consultation service below). However, at the tutor’s discretion, students may be helped more extensively. Enter your nickname, to the right, and start chatting today.
Advance sessions are for students writing much longer (10-20 page) papers. If your document is longer than 20 pages, you may need to set up a series of Advance Tutoring sessions. This service is intended for students looking to make major revisions to their structure, argument, or style.
Advance Tutoring is not meant for students seeking help with proofreading. If you are interested in working with the tutor to learn how to correct grammatical errors, you can bring in a shorter segment of your paper for a regular session or attend the Grammar Workshop. Students must have at least 10 pages of text written to make an Advance appointment. Please submit requests at least one week prior to your preferred appointment time.
