Faculty members of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy teach medical students three clinically oriented courses: Molecules to Cells followed by Gross Anatomy-Embryology-Organ Imaging followed by Histology. The Molecules to Cells course is a combination of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. The Gross Anatomy and Histology courses offer an intensive lecture-laboratory experience enabling students to acquire disciplined training within the framework of modern medical education. Gross Anatomy emphasizes dissection and integration of clinical imaging material under the guidance of medical educators seeking the development of humanistic attitudes and behavior toward human bodies. Histology is a continuation of Molecules to Cells. Both are taught to convey to students the significance of active learning and scientific reasoning in preparation for Physiology and Pathology. Another responsibility of the Department is to assist the Physician’s Assistant Program in teaching Gross Anatomy to physician’s assistant students.

Each of our departmental faculty shares the educational goal of providing medical students with an appreciation of why and how new knowledge is related to what they already know and how new knowledge will impact on their practice of medicine. Faculty who are members of the Graduate Center participate in the training of students working towards their Ph.D. degree, including an opportunity to participate as teaching assistants in a departmental course. Staff members contribute with their dedication and experience to the teaching and research objectives of our departmental faculty.

Our faculty are involved in research in the fields of male reproductive biology (Drs. Abraham L. Kierszenbaum and Laura L. Tres), developmental biology (Dr. Edward W. Gresik), neuroscience (Dr. Wan-Hua Yu) and molecular biology (Dr. Serafín Piñol-Roma).
