How long is The City College of New York (CCNY) Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education (SDSBE) Physician Assistant (PA) Program at Harlem Hospital Center? The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education Physician Assistant Program at Harlem Hospital Center’s duration is 28.5 months. There is a didactic phase of approximately 16.5 months followed by a 12 month clinical phase.
Is the CCNY/SDSBE Physician Assistant (PA) Program at Harlem Hospital Center an accredited PA Program? Yes. The CCNY/SDSBE Physician Assistant (PA) Program at Harlem Hospital Center is fully accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. ( www.arc-pa.org ).
What is the tuition for the program? Please refer to the CCNY website for tuition rates for the year in which you are applying. The PA Program has additional fees for medical equipment, malpractice insurance and books. These fees are noted in the CCNY Undergraduate Bulletin.
At the conclusion of training what credentials will I have? After successful completion of the CCNY/SBSBE Physician Assistant (PA) Program at Harlem Hospital Center, a Certificate of Completion for the PA Program will be granted to all graduates. A Bachelor of Science Degree in PA Studies (BS/PA) will be conferred by The City College of New York. Graduates who have successfully completed all CCNY/PA Program requirements are then eligible to sit for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) administered by the NCCPA (nccpa.net).
May I practice as a PA in primary care after I graduate from the CCNY/SDSBE Physician Assistant (PA) Program at Harlem Hospital Center? Yes. The broad-based curriculum of the PA Program meets or exceeds standards established by ARC-PA to ensure consistency of training of Physician Assistant for competency and licensure eligibility.
What is a regular PA Student schedule like? Students can expect to attend school full time five days per week. Due to the challenging nature of the professional medical education program, students are discouraged from employment during the Program.
May I attend the CCNY/SDSBE Physician Assistant (PA) Program at Harlem Hospital Center part-time? Are classes held on the weekend? No. The CCNY/SDSBE Physician Assistant (PA) at Harlem Hospital Center does not offer part-time enrollment. Classes are typically scheduled Monday through Friday generally between 8:00am-6:00pm. There may be an occasion when classes extend beyond normal hours. Due to the intensity of the coursework a full-time commitment is required of each student. This intensive schedule provides the opportunity to cover significant amounts of material within a short period of time.
Who will be the instructors during my training? Most of your instructors will be the faculty of the PA Program as well as faculty from the Harlem Hospital Center and other clinical affiliates. PA’s who are experts in their field are also invited to give select lectures to current students. As a PA Program with more than 35 years of experience, the teaching base is strong, committed, and well respected.
How long is the clinical phase? How long is each clinical rotation? The clinical phase is 12 months in duration. (Total duration includes rotations, vacation time and holiday breaks). Each clinical rotation is 6 (six) weeks in duration.
Are there classes during the clinical year? Yes. At the end of each clinical rotation there are (Call Back Fridays) at the PA Program classroom. These meetings include student as well as faculty presentations on a variety of topics. Board review sessions are scheduled as well.
