Vladimir Barayev Vladimir Barayev is a 2008 Sophie and Leonard Davis Scholarship Winner Vladimir Barayev, Sophie Davis Class of 2010, was awarded a 2008 Sophie and Leonard Davis Scholarship. Born in Uzbekistan he came to the U.S. as a child and graduated from Queens Gateway to Health Sciences High School in 2005.
His impressive academic honors at CCNY include making the Dean’s List in several semesters and a Leonard Davis Community Service Fellowship. Under the latter, he volunteered as a tutor at The Polo Grounds Community Center and as a mentor for children of incarcerated parents in the In Arms Reach program.
Mr. Barayev has volunteered in the ICU at Mount SinaiMedicalCenter and conducted independent research in the laboratory of Dr. Serafin Pinol-Roma, in Sophie Davis’ Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. There he studied RNA binding proteins and their possible role in certain mitochondrial disease states.
One semester, he was employed as a teaching assistant for the Health, Medicine and Society sequence of courses that students take in the spring of the second year. He’s a member of the American Medical Student Association and the Student National Medical Association. For the latter, he’s served as a tutor in math and science for freshmen at A. Philip Randolph High School on campus.
A Queens resident, Mr. Barayev will transfer to New York Medical College in 2010.
