Welcome!

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1904.  It offers instruction and research experience in all major areas of chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department is accredited by the American Chemical Society and offers options in standard chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental chemistry. The Chemistry department in conjunction with the School of Education also has an undergraduate option in secondary school teaching. Chemistry professor, John Lombardi, and collaborators create SERS method to study ancient artifacts.

Prof. John Lombardi, and researchers from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Pablo S. Londero and Marco Leona, have discovered a way to use Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) to analyze insoluble materials.  By using focused lasers to isolate a sample portion, then record the signals it emits, they can analyze it's components.  This laser vaporization technique helped the researchers discover the source material of the dye used in a piece of ancient Egyptian leather.
