INTERNATIONAL SERVICE-LEARNING PROGRAM IN MOROCCO 2012-2013

***Some knowledge of Arabic or French is preferred not required***
This is a three-week Service Learning program in Rabat, Morocco , offered in collaboration with the Center for Cross-Cultural Learning and Thaqafat Association Rabat, Morocco . Students will engage in an internship during the program (dates subject to change by a day or two), but will register for academic credit at City College in the Spring semester 2012.
Academic credit will be awarded as follows:
1. INTL 31001: Service-Learning Journal (1 credit)
2. INTL 31510: Seminar on Culture, Class and Gender in Morocco: (3 credits)

In the first week of the program, students will study "survival" Arabic in the mornings and work in their internships in the afternoons. Thereafter, they will be fully engaged in their internships.
Interns will be placed either with Amnesty International ( Morocco ), or L'Association Democratique des Femmes du Maroc, or AMESIP School for Street Children, or Le Féminin Pluriel. They will work eight hours a day for five days. Field trips may be arranged on weekends.
Students will be housed in homestays for part of the time, and in a downtown two-star hotel for the rest of the time. Program costs include field trips. Students are required to obtain travel and health insurance to cover their study abroad.
There will be a pre-departure orientation at City College at the end of the Fall semester, during which a reading list will be made available to students. This will be followed by one or more information sessions, and training sessions as needed. It is important that students attend all the pre-departure sessions Two pre-departure written assignments, and a term paper (to be turned in during the Spring semester) will be required in the course. A statement of interest should be included in the application. A program evaluation and de-briefing will be held prior to registration for credits in the Spring Semester.
