Service-Learning & Caribbean Culture Program in
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
When : June 8 to July 6, 2013
Where: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
This program is offered through InterRDom and FUNGLODE.
Serve in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The program combines workshops and activities to examine the history and culture of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Students explore themes related to colonialism, popular culture and religious practices, and discuss the real and fictitious elements that characterize modern ideas of what constitutes Caribbean culture. Participants will analyze primary source readings and develop command of theories and paradigms used to deconstruct discourse, text and other materials.
Instruction focuses on the micro history of the Caribbean; commercial strategies based on concepts of race, identity and gender; and Caribbean mythology, explored through the analysis of songs, short stories and poetry. Class topics are examined within the following theoretical frameworks: deconstructionism, Foucault, textual studies, gender studies, feminism, and ethnic theory, studies of race, negritude, Caribbeanist discourse, semiotics and linguistics. Workshops specialized for the service learning program will focus on agriculture and development.
Summer 2011 participant and City College student Eddie Cuesta was particularly pleased with the tailoring of his role in the program to his specific interests: “I have gained much from my participation in the InteRDom internship program,” he said, “and found it to be rewarding. This program was tailor-made for me.”
Students interested in participating in the program are encouraged to attend an information session with InteRDom and Study Abroad representatives in the City College Study Abroad office. At the information session students will learn more about the itinerary, cost and program logistics, as well as how to begin the application to participate.
