Information for Faculty

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

FIQWS OR PERSPECTIVES COURSES WITH A LEGAL THEME

The Skadden, Arps Honors Program in Legal Studies at the City College of New York is offering $1,000 to select faculty to develop and teach a FIQWS or Perspectives course with a legal theme.  With our Request for Proposals, the Program seeks to increase the number of courses offered at CCNY that include legal topics and issues. We encourage courses from a wide range of disciplines that will stimulate students to think about how the law shapes our society.  For example, we would welcome courses on topics such as The War on Terror, the Death Penalty, Immigration Reform, International Tribunals, Law and Literature, Philosophy of Law, Theories of Justice and Juvenile Justice Policy.

Proposal Guidelines

This must be a new course that has not been offered in the past. Instructors should plan on teaching the course at least two times and this plan should have their department chair’s approval. Bear in mind that FIQWS courses are for first-year students and that Perspectives courses target first-years and sophomores. These are introductory courses as opposed to advanced seminars.

Courses must include at least one of the following: 1) an examination of how the law impacts individuals, families, communities, society and/or the global community (such an examination can be done using social science methodologies or through literature, drama or film); 2) an examination of a policy issue with legal ramifications such as immigration reform, drug policy, the death penalty or the treatment of Guantanamo Bay detainees; 3) an exploration of the interrelationships between moral and legal theory, economics and the law, or culture and the law; and 4) an analysis of case law on a particular topic (e.g., The First Amendment and the Internet).

To be eligible, you must submit your course proposal to both the Skadden, Arps Program and to the Faculty Council Committee on General Education. This will require filling out two different forms. FIQWS or Perspectives Course forms are available from avasovic@ccny.cuny.edu. FIQWS or Perspectives Course with a Legal Theme Proposal forms and submission guidelines can be downloaded here
