Overview
The innovative, interdisciplinary Sustainability in the Urban Environment Masters program draws upon emerging approaches in each of the disciplines of architecture, engineering and science to prepare students to adapt old and advance new generations of buildings, urban infrastructure and open spaces while considering rapid urbanization, environmental degradation, peak oil, and climate change. Graduates will also develop leadership and teamwork skills giving them an advantage in diverse professional settings that demand interaction and collaboration among teams of scientists, engineers, architects and others.
The City College of New York already serves as a major national and regional resource while providing the City with the skilled workforce needed to drive its economy. This timely educational program is designed to meet the rapidly expanding employment demands for professional leaders in the emerging fields of sustainable architecture, engineering and science systems, such as those imposed by the City of New York’s PLANYC 2030: A Greener Greater New York, developed in 2006 by the Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability and which sets 10 major goals and 127 cross-cutting initiatives to sustain and enhance the quality of life in New York City.
